Doris Fern McFadden formerly of Paisley passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 30th 2023, at the Hanover Care Center. Survived by her children- Harvey (Jennifer), Stephen (Allana), Brad (Mary), Darcy (Cathy), Tammy Cadesky (Perry), Charlene. Grandchildren- Samantha Ash, Rachel Karcher (Chris), Kathryn Palmer (Chris), Shannon (Bryan), Marnie (Jake), Terry (Cal), Geordie, Conner and Duncan. Great Grandchildren- Jessica, Liam, Maeve, Emmett, Harlan. Great-great grandchildren- twins Macie & Madison & Peyton. Brother Jerry Whitbourn, sister- in-law Marie Whitbourn, in-laws Lloyd and Marie McFadden, Gladys McFadden, and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her loving husband Wilmer, sisters Marjorie and Joan, brothers Harold, Don and Fred, in-laws Harry Snelgrove, Kay Whitbourn, Fred Westbrook, & Grace Whitbourn, nephew Bruce Snelgrove, in-laws Allen McFadden, Ed & Shirley McFadden, Margaret & Ed Collins, Norma and Lloyd Platt, Ruby & Johnson Woods, Lois and Bruce McFadden, Ross and Verna McFadden. Fern was born and raised in London & Mt Brydges, Ontario. In 1942 at the age of 18, she enlisted in the RCAF (WD), becoming an equipment assistant, and in 1943 became a member of the band, playing the clarinet, entertaining returning and departing troops. She rose in ranks to Leading Aircraft Woman. In 1945 as the war ended, she transferred into the CWAC as a band member, was stationed in Kitchener until they departed on the Ile de France with about 600 other passengers, for Europe, to entertain the troops as they readied to come home. They travelled to Apeldoorn Holland, England, France, Belgium and Germany over a 6-month period, playing for troops in each country. When they sailed home on the same ship, there were 6,000 passengers, as they brought troops home. She was discharged in 1946, as a Private 1^st Class. She returned to London, where she trained as a seamstress, and took a job with Bell Canada as a phone operator. She retired in 1951 when Bell switched over to rotary phones. She met her husband Wilmer in 1949, and they were married in August of the same year.  They eventually moved to Greenock Township, where they raised their 4 boys and 2 girls on a dairy farm, where she worked in partnership with Wilmer running the farm business.  She took courses learning how to work with leather, making purses, belts, wallets and other accessories over the years. In 1981, they sold their dairy herd, moved into a home in Paisley, and continued a long enjoyable life. She spent decades as a member of the ACW, Bradley women’s Institute, Paisley Legion auxiliary, the Agricultural society and Fair board. She loved to knit, quilt, do crosswords, puzzles, crafts, & play euchre. In 2014 at the age of 90, she decided it was time to move to the Retirement home Maple Court in Walkerton, and in 2019 at the age of 95 transferred into LTC at the Hanover Care Centre. Deep appreciation to all the staff at the Hanover Care Centre, for making her final years enjoyable. Friends and relatives are invited to visitation from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at Cameron’s in Walkerton. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at St. Thomas Anglican Church, Walkerton. Rev. Rob Hiscox officiating. Interment in Douglas Hill Cemetery, Cargill.
